EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR - SAMARITAN MINISTRIES

Report to: The Board of Directors
Status: Full-time, Exempt

  • Position Summary
    Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for overall management and operation of Samaritan Ministries of The Temple Church and protection of the organization’s financial assets while ensuring compliance with board directives and applicable grantor, federal and state requirements.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    The Executive Director is responsible for overall operations, asset protection and marketing/public relations for Samaritan Ministries, a 501(c)(3) non-profit serving the needs of the family in Nashville, Tennessee.  Other responsibilities include:

    • Fundraising – Responsible for Development. Actively solicits underwriters/sponsors for the organization as well as for events; seeks grant opportunities; researches/networks to uncover new funding sources
    • Accounting/Financial  - Support all accounting functions including those necessary for auditing, budgeting, financial analysis, Invoice Payment, capital asset, property management and payroll in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, board and federal/state/private grant requirements.
    • Increasing Organizational Visibility – Secures regular opportunities to increase the visibility of Samaritan Ministries as well as the concept of Respite through various forms of the media, regular presentations to influential organizations throughout Nashville, Tn; maintaining memberships in/networking with appropriate organizations.
    • Grant Management/Program Oversight - Manages all grants and contracts; monitors progress of agreements and maintains agreement documentation to ensure fulfillment of agreement terms including receipt and expenditure of funds.
    • Human Resources Management - Conducts all aspects of human resource management for all employees, including but not limited to hiring and termination, developing position descriptions, Recommend compensation, and applying board-approved employee policies and benefits in accordance with federal and state requirements; supervises all staff.
    • Board Relations/Organizational Unity - Assists in the development of current and long-term organizational goals and objectives as well as policies and procedures for Samaritan Ministries operations.   Establishes plans to achieve goals set by the Board of Directors and implements policies, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.  Participates in Board Development/recruitment suggestions.
    • Office Operations - Analyzes and evaluates vendor services, particularly , to determine programs and providers that best meets the needs of Samaritan Ministries and makes recommendations to the Board, as appropriate; negotiates services, terms  and executes contracts with  plan providers, supply and service vendors, auditors and consultants; manages payroll programs.

    Core Competencies
    To perform effectively in this position, the individual must be able to provide evidence of the following competencies.  These core competencies represent effective administration of Samaritan Ministries and its programs thereby fulfilling Samaritan mission.

    • Management – Maintains effective systems of internal controls to account for all receipts and expenditures of funds. Manages funds to maximize the earnings under the federal regulations.  Manages staff according to defined goals and behaviors toward specific outcomes
    • Job Knowledge – Understands the technical aspects of managing a nonprofit organization; provides direction to staff directly and solicits guidance from experts when needed.  Understands the duties and responsibilities of the position and keeps job knowledge up-to-date.  Clearly understands the needs of the clients to continuously to execute the mission of the Samaritan Ministries and the goals.
    • Initiative in fulfilling the goals of the organization – Displays initiative in developing action plans and resolving problems as they occur, in consultation with the board.
    • Communication – Communicates effectively with multiple audiences using a variety of formats.  Proficiency in both written communication and verbal presentations.
    • Dependability – Seeks increased responsibility while remaining conscientious, thorough, accurate, and reliable with respect to achieving the organization’s goals.  This includes being available and responsive to issues and concerns as they arise.

    Technical Skills
    Must demonstrate proficiency in:

    • Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc)
    • Grant writing skills
    • Social media skills

    Education and/or Experience
    The Executive Director must be able to provide evidence of skills, knowledge and competencies which may result from formal education or at least Two years experience in non-profit operational and financial management or related areas.

    Travel
    The executive director must be able to travel to attend conferences, training and other events as required to acquiring and maintaining proficiency in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.  Driving will be necessary on most occasions.
